Tories win, but Lib-Dems increase their lead over Labour

7 May 2010

After an uncertain night across the UK, Hitchin & Harpenden Liberal Democrats could at least take some comfort from a small increase in the share of their vote locally.

Hitchin & Harpenden Liberal Democrats candidate Nigel Quinton secured second place in the 2010 General Election with 26.7% of the vote (14,598 votes). The Lib-Dem vote was nearly double Labour's as they were beaten into an extremely poor third, only achieving 13.6% (7,413 votes.)

Nigel said: "The Liberal Democrats are now the only real opposition to the Tory party in this region and we will continue to work hard for the residents of Hitchin & Harpenden."

"This was the first time I have stood in a General Election and I have enjoyed the experience immensely. The residents of this diverse constituency have been fantastic. My main hope is that they are represented fairly & honestly in Parliament."
